Any crime in which a person is targeted because of the following is classed as a hate crime:
- Sexual orientation;
The offence does not need to be against the person. For example, it could involve someone’s property. Anyone can be the victim of a hate crime.
If you are the victim of a hate crime, or see one happening, you should report it to the police immediately. Reporting hate crime not only helps stop the problem, it also informs the police of the levels of hate crime in a particular area and helps them respond better to such incidents.
Other ways to report an incident
If you do not want to report a hate crime to the police, Disability Stockport is a registered third party reporting centre. This means you can report a hate crime directly to Disability Stockport in confidence. The link below provides details of more of Stockport’s third party reporting centres.
You can also report hate crime online through the True Vision website.
