General information and advice

The ability to make informed choices and have fair access to services depends upon having good, relevant and timely information, and help to understand that information is vital.

FLAG (For Local Advice and Guidance)

FLAG is an independent service that puts people in need of social care and health guidance in touch with those local organisations best able to provide it. FLAG's main office is centrally situated and easy to find at Graylaw House, Chestergate, Stockport. There are also local FLAG advisers out and about in the community keeping you informed about local activities and providing one to one support and guidance.

Stockport Advice

The Advice and Information Service provided by Stockport Advice can help you with a wide range of financial issues. The service is based in Stockport Direct Local Centres where you can get advice on Council services, debts, benefits, tax credits and consumer problems. Specially trained staff can advise you on managing your money, including debt advice, help you claim benefits and give useful tips on how to maximise your income. For more information visit the Stockport Direct Centre at Fred Perry House, Edward Street, Stockport or one of the 11 Stockport Direct Local Centres situated around the borough.

Stockport's Libraries

If you are looking for information then your local library could be the answer! All libraries in Stockport have a wealth of information available on a wide range of subjects, from heath and wellbeing to travel, tourism and consumer issues. Just pop in and check out the books, tapes, DVDs and online resources available at little or no cost.

Citizens Advice Bureau

Although funded by Stockport Council, the Citizens Advice Bureau is an independent organisation that helps people resolve their legal, money and other problems by providing free information and advice. They aim to provide the advice people need for the problems they face and to improve the policies and practices that affect people's lives. There are offices in central Stockport, Marple and Cheadle.

Age UK Stockport's Information and Advice Service

Staff at Age UK Stockport have considerable experience and a specialist focus on services for people aged 50 and over. They provide independent information and advice relevant to you and your situation including general issues, your finances and your rights, help filling in forms and identifying and finding the practical help you need in your daily life.

Consumer Direct

This is a telephone and online service offering information and advice on consumer issues. Trained staff give practical advice on all kinds of complaints relating to goods or services; from problems with cars to faulty household appliances and finance agreements. Complaints reported to Consumer Direct are logged on a national database and if needed they will contact Trading Standards on your behalf. They can also put you in touch with other agencies who may be able to help you.
