Being driven
Some people find it difficult to use public transport due to their disability or mobility problems. Community transport offers a number of different ways for people who would otherwise be unable to get out and about to visit shops and other local amenities.
GMPTE
GMPTE sells discounted Travel Vouchers for people who are not
able to use ordinary buses due to serious mobility problems, or are
registered blind. The vouchers can be used to pay for taxis and for
travel on accessible bus services, such as Ring and Ride. They also
give free or cheap travel on trains and Metrolink. If you already
have a concessionary travel pass providing free off-peak travel on
buses and trains you will have to send it back when you choose to
have Travel Vouchers.
Ring and Ride
This is a local organisation providing a door-to-door
minibus service for people of all ages who find it difficult to use
public transport. This service can help people get to the shops,
attend medical appointments, travel to work, school or further
education college, take part in social and leisure activities and
access places of worship. It also includes travel into Tameside and
Manchester. They also offer Travel Support Aid assistance for those
who would otherwise be unable to travel.

Your local taxi company is another way of getting out and about
safely if you are unable to use public transport. If you have GMPTE
Travel vouchers instead of a concessionary travel pass you can use
these to pay for journeys at a discounted rate. Local taxi firms
will be listed in your telephone directory. There are a number of
taxi drivers in Stockport who have undergone disability awareness
training and some have specially adapted vehicles. When you make a
