What is available?

Many people with High Functioning Autism (HFA) or Aspergers can and do live full and active lives, although at times they may benefit from additional advice or support.

In Stockport we have developed a new service that can offer that much needed support, for example help to develop relationships and life skills, employment support or support to help prevent crisis. Or it could be that we just offer information and advice and maybe signpost on to other services that may be able to help.

High Functioning Autism & Aspergers Service

Who can get it?

Specialist advice and support is available to people with a formal diagnosis of High Functioning Autism (HFA) or Asperger Syndrome without any other identified disabilities.

What is HFA and Asperger Syndrome?

HFA and Asperger Syndrome are both part of the 'autism spectrum'. These are lifelong conditions that affect how a person makes sense of the world, processes information and relates to other people. They can affect people in many different ways and you cannot tell that someone has HFA or Aspergers from their outward appearance. People with HFA or Aspergers find it hard to communicate with others or in social situations.

What happens next?

In order to work out just how much help is needed to make life easier for you, we do need to carry out an assessment.

What is an assessment?

After the assessment we will identify and agree your needs with you and discuss the help and support available to meet them.

Who provides the service?

A local organisation called Brothers of Charity Services (BOCS) provide this service in Stockport. They are an organisation whose vision is to provide a range of services to people with HFA or Aspergers which support their individuality, choice, rights and dreams.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge for the first six weeks. After that there will be some cost but the actual amount you pay will depend on what services you receive. We will be able to give you more information about charges when we have carried out an assessment and agreed with you the type of help and support needed.

Can I get help with the cost?

It is possible. We will help you fill out a financial assessment form to see if you qualify for financial help. To get a rough idea of costs you can carry out a quick, confidential financial self assessment, online.
